MAXIE SWAIN IT COULD BE MILLS AND BOOM
By Campbell believes new-look squad has the potential to achieve big things for Drumaness
Corrigan and Sean Dornan, have been all been unavailable due to GAA commitments with Castlewellan.
In their absence, Drumaness began the season ominously, losing their first three league games, but they are unbeaten in their last four since then, albeit winning just one of those, a 4-1 drubbing of Derriaghy.
“At the minute, I’m hoping we can finish in the top six,” said Campbell. “I’d be happy with that, particularly after the way we started, and after last season, we definitely needed an influx of players because last year wasn’t good enough.
“At the end of the season we were struggling, and if we got a few injuries, we were struggling. It was a small squad, and if you get a few injuries or boys have to work, then we were in trouble, but the signings we made are coming to fruition now, the boys coming in from the Gaelic are going to be a big help.
“Hopefully after this Saturday we will have 90% of the players back, so if we could get top six, and get a run in the cups, that’s what we’ll be looking for.”
Campbell is also counting down the days until midfielder Owen Wright’s return from a broken leg, lamenting how badly his team have missed his bite in the tackle, and the thrust he brings to the middle of the park.
“He’s been a massive loss to us,” added the Drumaness chief. “He was our engine, and has been a major loss. He won’t be back until after Christmas, it was a bad break, so we had to get players in to cover for him as well. He gives the whole club a lift, he’s that type of player and the whole club are looking forward to getting him back.”
Reflecting on Saturday’s win, Campbell says he’s hopeful his former club Downshire will stabilise after what has been a torrid start to the season for the 1B club.
“They are probably in a bit of transition at the minute,” said Campbell. “For the first 20 minutes on Saturday, they played well and it took us a while to get to grips with them.
“I think they just ran out of steam in the second half but it is a good club, a great club and the lads up there are brilliant, so they will turn it around because they have the right people at the club and the right committee.”
