The ego may be landing soon in Toon

-

THE rumours about Peter Kenyon putting together a consortium to take over at Newcastle are interesting.

While, clearly, that would be a good thing for the fans – on the basis that literally anyone, including Satan – would be a better sight in the directors’ box, they should be forewarned.

With Kenyon (above), you get a different form of arrogance from Mike Ashley, but also a more dangerous level of ego. This was the Suit who gave a presentation to City investors bragging Chelsea would be “internationally recognised as the world’s No.1 football club by 2014”. Didn’t happen.

He’s the only chief executive to lead losing Champions League finalists up the steps to get their medals, accepting one for himself, and the only one to sit in the Old Trafford directors’ box and hear supporters of both Manchester United and Chelsea chant “You’re a b ****** ” in his direction.

Plus, in 2008, when Sepp Blatter asked clubs to consider restricting their starting line-ups to five foreign players, Kenyon angrily replied that Chelsea shouldn’t be asked to “dumb down” as it was up to smaller teams to “get their houses in order, rather than us coming down to their level”.

Who was one of the smaller teams he cited? Yes. Newcastle.

Enjoy, folks.

THAT was an interesting quote about David Luiz from Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri at the weekend: “If he has to say something to me, he does that. I appreciate very much the man as he is direct.” There couldn’t be a greater contrast with the assessment of Luiz by Sarri’s predecessor, Antonio Conte, who brutally discarded the Brazilian after he questioned his tactics last November. Makes you wonder, looking at the way Luiz is now playing, that if Conte had been more appreciative of his directness he might still be his manager.
