ANNE Final twist for the old corkscrew
Peake performance as fighter for the 96
ACTRESS Maxine Peake fights for justice as she plays Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams – speaking to thousands in Liverpool in 2012.
Anne, who died at 62 a year later, lost son Kevin, 15, at the semi-final disaster in April 1989. A fourpart ITV drama shows how Anne’s 23-year fight led to a verdict that the 96 were unlawfully killed.
Maxine, 44, said: “She really is inspirational.” THE death of the corkscrew came a step closer following the launch of a twist-off cork for wine bottles.
The champagne cork-style stopper hits Co-op shelves today and will provide the distinctive “pop” in just a couple of turns.
Then the 100% cork tops twist back in again for an airtight seal.
They have been created for the chain by Portuguese cork manufacturer Amorim.
The cork makes its first appearance in £6 bottles of the Co-op’s red Adega Vila Real Rabelo.
In tests carried out by Oxford University, volunteers said wine tasted 15% better when they heard the pop of a cork compared with a metal cap. And 113 out of 140 testers said they would rather buy wine with a cork. Sarah Benson, Co-op wine buyer, said: “It’s an exciting development.” The cork has taken four years to perfect. Carlos de Jesus, of Amorim, said it is also “environmentally friendly”. The stopper could save the cork industry which has struggled since the arrival of cheaper plastic versions and metal tops. Mr de Jesus said: “Go back 15 years, the forecast was anything but optimistic. Where we are is completely different.”
