Making it a good day for Weld

- BY PETER O’HEHIR

MAKING LIGHT, a multiple stakes-race winner, looks the filly to beat in the listed Clodovil Irish BF Garnet Stakes in Naas tomorrow.

The Tamayuz filly, trained by Dermot Weld for Moyglare Stud Farm, must concede 8lb to her 13 rivals in the one-mile contest.

She is drawn in the outside stall and must bounce back from a below par effort, when favourite, in the Group 2 Boomerang Stakes at Leopardstown last time.

But Making Light still looks the class act in tomorrow’s field, having recorded two wins at this level and also two victories in Group 3 company, including her smooth defeat of (my fancy for tomorrow’s Bluebell Stakes) in the Park Express over course and distance on the opening day of the 2018 flat season in March.

Making Light also won the listed Platinum Stakes in Cork in August, when particularly impressive in beating Pincheck, in addition to achieving third placings in the Gladness at tomorrow’s venue and the Group 2 Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh.

Declan Mcdonogh’s mount is a confident choice to beat Aidan O’brien’s

generally disappointing since her excellent second to Alpha Centauri in the Irish 1,000 Guineas in May, and the unexposed, Patrick Prendergast-trained

third to Ship Of Dreams at this level in Limerick last week.

Joe Murphy has been enjoying better fortune in recent weeks. And, despite conceding weight to his 15 rivals, his

is a hopeful nap choice in the final of the Foran Equine two-year-old series.

An Equiano gelding, he caught the eye on his debut at Gowran Park early last month finishing fourth to Western Australia.

And he built on that promise in a Foran qualifier at Fairyhouse when ridden by tomorrow’s partner Billy Lee, he overcame a wide draw and outclassed his rivals, pickingup well to beat the consistent but admittedly limited That’s Not Me.

Well-regarded, Gustavus Weston is drawn high again but over seven furlongs at Naas, Lee will be able to drop him in and take his time.

In a competitive race, Lee’s mount might have most to fear from the Ger Lyons-trained pair, twice-placed maiden

and dual Roscommon winner

Earlier, whose stamina might have been stretched when beaten by Smart Flies on this track, should prove tough to beat, dropping back to six furlongs, in the Rathasker Stud 2-Y-0 Fillies Maiden.
