MIRACLES? THEY KANE HAPPEN

Harry refuses to give up on Spurs’ Euro dream

-

INSPIRED by the miracles of Munich and Istanbul, Harry Kane is allowing himself to dream.

Tottenham’s England captain led from the front to save his club with a Champions League rescue act to sink PSV on Tuesday night.

Qualification from Group B still looks a tough ask with

Spurs needing to beat

Inter Milan by a greater margin than the 2-1 victory the Italians managed at the San

Siro in September.

Spurs would then need to win at Barcelona in their final group game in December. Yet after Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in Bayern Munich’s backyard six years ago (circle) and the even more unlikely win for Liverpool in Turkey in 2005, Kane believes anything is possible.

“The Champions League has thrown up some amazing fairy tales in the past,” he said. “When I watched Chelsea against Barca they looked as though they had no hope, and they ended up getting through somehow and winning the final. Liverpool were 3-0 down in the final and won (above), so sometimes things are meant to be.

“I’m not saying this is going to be our year but this win gives us that little bit more belief we can get through the group and that’s the next step for us. That’s all we can try and do. If we can do that we’ll be ready to fight in the knockout stages.”

Defeat to PSV, after the stadium delays, injuries and disappointments over a lack of new signings, would have been the latest blow in a troubled season.

The club’s fans had all but given up hope at Wembley on Tuesday and even – for the first time in Mauricio Pochettino’s reign – booed one of his decisions as he replaced Lucas Moura with Erik Lamela.

Yet the win vindicated the manager and proved to be the latest example of the belief and character instilled by the Argentine into his squad. “We know that everyone would like to be in the new stadium,” said Kane. “We are in a position in the league where we are not too far behind. We know we could have played better.

“The Champions League hasn’t been good either, although this game was a little bit better. It has been one of those years where we have had to just grind it out – like against Wolves when we won 3-2 after being 3-0 up.

“It’s been one of those seasons so far. We’ve kept ourselves alive. Now we’ve got another tough game to go and win, and then see where we are at going into the international break.”

That game on Saturday is a trip to Crystal Palace as Spurs bid to build – amid all their problems – on their best-ever start to a Premier League season.

Kane scored the winner in the fixture last term – two minutes from time, and he added: “I remember that. It was a nice feeling. It was a similar kind of game to PSV. I got to a set-piece and scored from it.

“So we know we are more than capable of winning this game.”
