O’BRIEN NEEDS A LIDL BIT OF LUCK
AIDEN O’BRIEN is itching for another Lidl chance at filling Robbie Keane’s boots as Ireland’s Centra-forward.
The Millwall man only has three caps and yet of the six strikers available against Northern Ireland and Denmark, he is the only one with a senior goal
Sean Maguire, Callum Robinson, Scott Hogan, Ronan Curtis and Southampton teenager Michael Obafemi are the others in contention.
O’brien said: “Whether you’re working in Lidl or whatever you’re doing in life, you’re always going to have competition. All of us here want to play.”
The search goes on for a prolific scorer and Martin O’neill will be hoping that O’brien is more ‘Aldo’ than Aldi.
He caught the eye when scoring on his debut away to Poland in September and followed up with appearances in the Nations League against Denmark and Wales.
“I’m the type of player who can sniff a chance,” he said. “If I miss one, it’s not going to dwell in my head because I know the next one is going in the net.”
Meanwhile, Matt Doherty saw a specialist in England yesterday over a facial injury that leaves him doubtful for Ireland’s upcoming games.
The Wolves defender shipped an elbow to the head in his club’s
1-1 Premier League draw with
Arsenal on Sunday.
