Shane stops actor Depp from playing a Pogues number at his wedding
POGUES wildman Shane Macgowan pulled the plug on actor Johnny Depp performing one of his most famous songs at his wedding.
The 62-year-old married Victoria Mary Clarke on Monday in what was called an “unfussy” ceremony in Copenhagen with no rings or white dress.
Victoria, 52, who had been dating the former Pogues singer for 30 years, revealed how her husband told Hollywood star Depp to stop mid song and sing another tune instead.
She told Ryan Tubridy on RTE Radio One yesterday: “Johnny tried to do Rainy Night In Soho which Shane stopped.
“He said, ‘I don’t want to hear it’. Then he did Astral Weeks which was absolutely gorgeous. It was fantastic.” The Coronas also performed after the ceremony.
Victoria added: “They played, they played a lot. They were really good.”
The journalist, who this week said she fell for the legendary hellraiser aged 16, admitted she’s surprised people are interested in their relationship.
She added the couple picked the Danish capital for the ceremony as it is beautiful in the winter – especially the old amusement park Tivoli Gardens.
She said: “I’m really surprised people are so interested.
“It was actually so beautiful. I couldn’t have imagined it being more beautiful. I know that sounds really corny.
“It was a Danish civil ceremony done by the registrar in the city hall. The city hall in Copenhagen is one of those enormous medieval, Gothic kind of palaces, so it was quite an interesting location.
“She [the registrar] was really nice. She said, ‘Make sure you always laugh together, that you always have a sense of humour’. I could never imagine a priest saying that to you.
“I kind of like it there. It’s really beautiful, especially in the winter.
“They have a place called the Tivoli Gardens, which is like the oldest fun fair in the world.
“It’s full of Christmas trees and snowmen. It’s really pretty.” Instead of a speech,

Victoria said she danced instead as her voice had gone. And when asked if Shane was romantic on the big day, she concluded: “No not really, he was his usual self, he hasn’t changed at all.” Victoria previously revealed how she became obsessed by what she called Shane’s “monstrous arrogance”.
She said they have “hung on for a ride” that took in “fame, creativity and ecstasy, drink, drugs and crazy, wild sex” and “madness, self-destruction and despair”.
