A GUNMAN killed two people and injured 11 others near Strasbourg Christmas market in a horror shooting last night.

The wounded were seen lying on the floor and desperately taking shelter as the market and nearby restaurants were evacuated. Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson and her staff were among those who fled the scene.

Armed soldiers were seen running to the emergency. The gunman was later cornered by French police and shots were fired late last night.

He was identified as a 29-year-old whose home had been searched by officers earlier in the day in connection with a robbery. The French prosecutor said anti-terror cops are now investigating the incident but a motive had not yet been confirmed.

Derry politician Ms Anderson and three of her staff were at a leaving do in the market when the gunman struck.

She said: “We had just been walking away from the market down a street deciding what restaurant to go to. The incident was at the bottom of that street and suddenly it was pandemonium.

“I heard the first shot and thought it was fireworks, I didn’t initially think shots. Then there was another one and another one and I knew then, obviously, with growing up in the Bogside and what we had gone through in the conflict.

“We were running in the other direction, telling people to run back and get back. There were people coming out of apartments and hotels. One woman came out with a child and I told her to go back in.

“We knew something was wrong but there was so much confusion. It was only when we went on social media we saw footage of people lying injured.”

The gunman is said to have been on a watchlist of around 26,000 people, of whom 10,000 are believed to have been radicalised.
