A SPROUTSTANDING IDEA THAT CAN’T BE BATTERED

Deep fried Brussels on chippy menu

- BY CIARA COLHOUN

YOU’VE heard of deep fried Mars bars but a chip shop owner has gone one batter with a traditional festive vegetable.

Brussels sprouts may well be a divisive Christmas dinner side you either love or hate but Vincent Mcaleer of Macs Pizzas promises his version are “absolutely gorgeous”.

Customers of his Newry, Co Down, takeaway have queued out the door for battered chocolate bars – with deep fried Kit Kats, Yorkies, Twirls and Mars on the dessert menu.

But it was the success of Vincent’s coated chips that inspired him to try something more festive with the humble sprout. Boiling the fresh green vegetable before tossing it in flour and coating it in his secret recipe batter, he promises the result are “unreal”.

Vincent said: “People are buying them for the novelty factor but they are surprised by how nice they are. They are absolutely gorgeous. We have done a good few portions already.”

The shop opens its doors at 10am and the deep fried sprouts are now available all day.

To keep up his reputation for running “no ordinary chippy”, Vincent is already thinking ahead to what he could deep fry next year.

The 43-year-old added: “I am not sure what I will do but I’d say battered Easter Eggs might be worth a go.”
