Callanan’s back with a bang to fell Treaty

- Limerick Tipperary BY

SEAMUS CALLANAN scored 2-7 as Tipperary beat All-ireland champions Limerick in the Munster League at the Gaelic Grounds.

Tipp boss Liam Sheedy used a blend of youth and experience and must have been happy with the outcome.

Limerick started with eight of their Championship winning side and they battled bravely. Indeed, they might have had a late goal but for a superb save by Brian Hogan between the Tipperary posts.

James Barry, Seamus Kennedy, Ronan Maher provided fine support to Callanan while Limerick will be happy with the performances of Sean Finn, Paddy O’loughlin, Barry O’connell and Aaron Gillane, who once again top scored for his side.

Tipperary afforded the champions the traditional guard of honour but within 50 seconds of the throw-in the visitors went in front with a penalty superbly struck low by Callanan.

The Treaty men hit back with points by Barry O’connell, David Reidy and Colin Ryan to level.

Two frees by Callanan were matched by points from Aaron Gillane (free) and Reidy.

Jason Forde had Tipperary back in front but a superb point by Colin Ryan tied it up once again.

Andrew La Touche Cosgrave hit the last score of a half which produced many quality moments to leave Tipperary in front by 3-6 to 0-11.

The Premier men led 4-9 to 0-12 but Reidy scored a splendid goal to eat into the deficit for the home side, and another very late goal by Gillane kept the score respectable.
