AN American man has been arrested in Russia on suspicion of spying.
The man, named as Paul Nicholas Whelan, was held in Moscow last Friday “while carrying out an act of espionage”, authorities in the Russian capital said.
He was seized by the FSB, the successor to the KGB as Russia’s domestic intelligence agency.
It said he faces a “criminal case” under “article 276 of the Criminal code of the Russian Federation”, which refers to espionage.
The FSB has been sanctioned by the US amid growing tensions between Russia and the West.
Also sanctioned is the GRU military intelligence arm, of which two officers are accused over the Salisbury novichok attack. MAN United star Paul Pogba’s £250,000 Rolls-royce Wraith is pictured parked in a disabled bay without a permit.
A shopper, whose wife is disabled, snapped the luxury motor at Manchester’s Trafford Centre.
He said: “I was with my wife doing my shopping when I saw the Rolls-royce parked there.
“When I looked, the car didn’t have a disabled badge, but it did have a Monaco registration plate.”
The 52-year-old Network Rail worker said he later saw the same car going into Manchester United’s training ground on TV.
He added: “I don’t follow football so I didn’t know it was a footballer until third parties told me.”
It is not known if the French international had been at the wheel of the car before it was parked on December 19. Sporting a Monaco number plate, the car did not appear to have a disabled blue badge in the window.
Midfielder Pogba, 25 – believed to earn £260,000 a week – was pictured driving the car last year.
But after he was fined for speeding, he was seen in the passenger seat while being driven into United’s training ground. In October the World Cup winner was fined £350 and given three points on his licence by magistrates after being clocked at 40mph in a 30mph zone near Preston, Lancs, in September 2017.
The Trafford Centre said: “We have clear signage and monitor the car park to minimise misuse.”
