RINGING in the New Year with their bundles of joy, these parents were all smiles as they enjoyed cuddles with their adorable additions.

It was a more eventful and emotional start to 2019 for the mums and dads who spent January 1 in maternity wards across Northern Ireland.

Derry mum Katrina won the baby race when son Everett Sharkey was the first to arrive at 12.01am in Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry. He weighed 8lb 8oz.

The first baby born in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital at 2.01am was Harry James Ross whose mum Jane beamed proudly as she cradled her 6lb 9oz son.

Also entering the world on New Year’s Day at the Royal was Denise Conlan’s baby girl Poppy, born at 2.04am.

The midwives on the ward – Linda Robinson and Rachael Mcinnes – were keen to get a cuddle with the 7lb 11oz bundle of joy.

Arriving later that morning at 8.26am was Dougie and Heather Mallon’s baby boy Jason, who weighed 8lb 9oz. Meanwhile, the Currans, from Warrenpoint welcomed baby girl Fiadh at Daisy Hill Hospital. She weighed in at 8lb 5oz.

Mummy Maria, daddy Adrian and big brother Callan were all delighted with the 5.10am arrival.

The maternity team at Altnagelvin also had a busy morning as midwife Melissa helped Co Derry couple Helena and Ryan King bring baby Charli into the world at 10.33am. He weighed in at 6lb 4oz.
