Hunt warning over cost of snubbing PM’S deal
BREXITEER MPS risk Britain staying in the EU if they spurn Theresa May’s deal, Jeremy Hunt said yesterday.
He warned: “What we may end up with is not a different type of Brexit but Brexit paralysis – and Brexit paralysis ultimately could lead to no Brexit.”
The Foreign Secretary spoke up as Tory whips launch a final bid to persuade MPS to back
Mrs May in Tuesday’s crunch vote. She is hoping for a reassurance from Brussels over the Irish backstop to sway votes her way.
Last night Shadow Chancellor John Mcdonnell said Brexit should be delayed “if Parliament can’t agree on the process forward or if it’s so late in doing that”.
He said Labour would decide on the timing of a no-confidence vote to bring down the Government after Tuesday’s result. The party’s ex-deputy leader Roy Hattersley will today demand a second referendum, saying: “There is no conceivable deal which is remotely as beneficial to Great Britain as full membership of the European Union.”
And Tory Remainer Dominic Grieve said voters must be asked “to reconsider their decision”.
“Parliamentarians do have some duties and one of them is to prevent people from committing national suicide,” he added.
Ministers have reportedly warned the PM that Brexit may have to be put back if her deal is voted down. But No10 said: “We will ensure either way we have passed the necessary legislation.”
