Pep paddy won’t stop me taking ‘crazy’ risks says City goalkeeper
EDERSON claims he will keep taking risks – even if Pep Guardiola is unimpressed.
Guardiola was unhappy with him for racing out of his penalty area during Manchester City’s routine win over Wolves to exchange passes with Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho in midfield.
The City boss answered “No, no, no, no, no, no” when asked about Ederson’s antics and felt his Brazilian goalkeeper took an unnecessary gamble.
Yet Ederson says Guardiola has given him the confidence to play this way during his 18 months at City.
The £35million stopper insists he won’t change his style, even though he admits it may cause mistakes.
“I have improved a lot since I arrived,” said Ederson. “Pep always gave me a lot of confidence to play my way. I might have made mistakes because of my way of playing, but mistakes are part of football. I never let that influence my game.
“I really appreciate the freedom and the confidence he gives me to play the style of football he wants. He helped me a lot.”
City’s comfortable victory over Wolves closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to four points and Ederson says the champions have the mental strength to handle the pressure of the title race.
Ederson, 25, who has kept 12 clean sheets this season, said: “It’s going to be a very tight battle.
“We’re ready for the challenge. We are mentally strong and, if we manage to keep the same level we have started the season with, I think we can achieve all our targets.”
