KEOGH SPOT-ON TO KO SAINTS

Southampton 2 Derby 2

AET: Derby win 5-3 on penalties

KEOGH kept his nerve to sink Southampton and fire Derby into round four.

Frank Lampard’s side took their Premier League opponents to a penalty shootout at St Mary’s.

And after Nathan Redmond (above) skied his effort high into the stand, the Derby defender slotted home the visitors’ fifth penalty from five attempts to win it.

In a wide-open game of numerous chances and almost as many VAR reviews, Saints appeared to be coasting with 20 minutes left when they went two goals clear.

But Derby roared back with two goals of their own in six minutes to force extra time and then penalties as the two sides battled for the right to play Accrington Stanley in the fourth round.

Derby were neat and purposeful, with Mason Mount cool and collected in midfield.

But the hosts should have taken the lead when teenager Tyreke Johnson crossed and Shane Long raced in to volley first time – only for Rams keeper Kelle Roos to save.

Mount then lashed his shot over after another fast-flowing Derby move – and it was clear Saints were going to have a battle on their hands.

The visitors thought they had bagged the opening goal when Harry Wilson and Martyn Waghorn cleverly combined to set up Craig Bryson to stroke the ball home.

But referee Anthony Taylor consulted VAR and ruled that Waghorn was offside by the tightest of margins – about a toe’s length.

Stuart Armstrong lashed a 25-yard drive just over the bar as Saints tried to assert themselves after the break, but their opponents were WELLRICHARD organised and stubborn Chelsea loanee Mount, impressive throughout, then strode through the Saints midfield to drive his shot just wide of Angus Gunn’s post.

Saints were trying to crank up the pressure, but the Premier League side were not finding it easy.

One lovely turn from Mount left his marker nowhere, but the youngster hit his shot straight at Gunn. Sub Redmond almost undid the Rams, as the winger stepped inside and curled in a drive that Roos did well to turn round the post.

The breakthrough came when Mohamed El Younoussi got past his man on the right and crossed. Long saw his header cleared off the line by Scott Malone, but Armstrong nodded in the loose ball.

Two minutes later it was two, as Redmond raced onto a long pass from Stephens and chipped the ball over the onrushing Roos.

But, six minutes later, Derby were back in it, as Wilson’s freekick left Gunn standing.

Eight minutes from time, Derby levelled when Waghorn (above) headed home to force extra time.
