8 things to learn about our enchanting hero
taking a leaf out of Pooh’s book? We look at his best nuggets...
It turns out Winnie-the-pooh was surprisingly good with motivational messages to make you go after your dreams.
Just look at these encouraging snippets to help you reach your ambitions: “Never let things come to you, go out and fetch them.”
And how’s this for a lesson in knowing your own strengths and weaknesses?
“I wish I could jump like that. But some can and some can’t. That’s how it is.”
But remember:
Winnie was named after a real Canadian black bear at London Zoo.
The real Christopher Robin received a teddy bear on his first birthday from his father, Alan Alexander Milne. It was an 18in bear from Harrods that could growl. When playing with Christopher and this bear Milne decided to write the books.
Pooh’s friends Eeyore, Kanga, Roo and Tigger also came from toys that were bought for Christopher Robin at Harrods.
Owl and Rabbit were the only two that weren’t inspired by Christopher Robin’s toys. Instead their characters came from real animals on Cotchford Farm, the Milnes’ property in Sussex.
Cotchford Farm estate was bought by Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones who died in a swimming pool there in 1969.
All the original toys were donated to “People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.” the New York Public Library in 1987. They were recently cleaned and repaired, with Eeyore needing the most work.
The real Christopher Robin was once allowed to feed the real Winnie the bear in her enclosure at London Zoo.
But the real Winnie was so popular with visitors she ended up getting gum disease because of the honey on all the sticky buns they gave her.
