Eve spiel deal after Chinese language win

AN Ulster pupil has been hailed as one of the UK’S best Chinese speakers – after just one year learning the language.

Eve Flood, from Derry’s Thornhill College, scooped the Beginners prize in the HSBC British Council Mandarin Speaking Competitio­n in London.

Patrick Murray from Rathmore Grammar in Belfast also celebrated success by coming second.

Eve beat rivals from across the UK to scoop a week-long trip to Beijing.

Speaking about her win, the A-level pupil said: “It hasn’t really sunk in yet.

“My parents think it’s fantastic, they don’t know much about Mandarin but they have been very encouragin­g and instilled a lot of confidence in me.”
