My favourite scene in this fabulous series finale had to be the utter flight of fancy involving John Thomson’s Pete.

No, not the bit where he settled down to watch Manchester United in a cup tie in which they were “already 4-nil up from the first leg”. (I’m guessing he must have been watching an old Fergie DVD from way back in the 1990s).

I’m talking about the actual fantasy scene in which Pete daydreamed his mates on to The Jeremy Kyle Show.

I know other programmes have tried the Kyle trick, but no one has pulled it off quite so brilliantly.

Faye Ripley’s Jen bursting out from backstage ready to punch anyone in her way was the absolute icing on the cake.

It was a great way to round off what was easily the best series since Cold Feet rebooted in 2016.

Much of the credit for that has to go to Ripley and writer Mike Bullen, who handled Jen’s cancer storyline so magnificently they had fully earned the licence to make some jokes about it last night.

ITV’S boss may have given up on sitcoms, but as long as he does the sensible thing and recommissions Cold Feet we’ll be okay for laughs.

Away from Jen’s cancer, the most successful storyline was one that seemed like a terrible idea: Adam (James Nesbitt) getting it on with Karen (Hermione Norris).

It worked, though. Not only did it lead to Pete’s Kyle dream, it also gave us an emotional climax in which Jen offered them her blessing – and a warning: “Just don’t screw it up.”

Too right, Jen. Well, not until the middle of the next series anyway.
