Big winners head back to the future

THE outfits might have had timeless appeal at the Brit Awards last night but when it came to the big winners The 1975 reigned.

The chart-topping four-piece – fronted by Matty Healy, 29 – son of stars Denise Welch and Tim Healy – took home Best Group and Best British Album.

They performed their hit Sincerity Is Scary in a night of mega-setpieces.

But there were some hitches when a travelator they walked along broke down during rehearsals.

Arena in a hoop and performed a medley of her hits, including a surprise collaboration with Bastille’s

Ben Lawrence on Just Give Me A Reason.

Pink, 39, finished her performance flanked by flame throwers as she sang What About Us with school performers and local dance troupes.

But the night started as spectacularly as it ended when Hugh Jackman kicked off proceedings with a performance from the hit movie musical The Greatest Showman.

The opening number featured the Wolverine star, 50, singing The Greatest Show while flanked by 100 dancers dressed in capes, top hats and swinging canes... before host Jack Whitehall popped out of a cake. The movie soundtrack was the UK’S biggest-selling album last year.

Singer George Ezra, 25, was named Best British Male, while Jorja Smith took Best British Female, arriving at the ceremony in a stunning feather-rimmed halter-neck frock.

Other huge performances came from Calvin Harris, 35, who spent £77,000 on a giant dancing crab and an oriental dragon to replicate the video for his Best British Single award-winning hit, One Kiss.

His slot included appearances from Dua Lipa, 23, Rag’n’bone Man,

34, and Sam Smith, 26, and 100 dancers in a setting of fake snow, raining rose petals and a forest.

Calvin was named Best Producer – his first Brit award win after being nominated 16 times in 10 years. International winners included Beyonce, 37, and Jay-z, 49, who recorded a video message, as well as Ariana Grande, 25, and Drake, 32. Ed Sheeran, 28, was given the Global Success Award. Singer Anne-marie, 27, had the most nominations, with four but did not win any awards.

Best Breakthrough went to Tom Walker, while singer Jess Glynne, 29, who has been poorly this week, looked sensational in a cream silk dress.
