Guests corner thug who stole from premiere of Derry Girls

Thief chased into bingo hall with cutlery haul

- BY GEORGE JACKSON

A MAN who stole cutlery from a Derry Girls’ premiere and was chased by party guests into a bingo hall has been jailed for four months.

Adam Raymond Mcdaid was drunk and dressed as a caterer when he fled the city’s Guildhall carrying a tool box and knives belonging to Posh Nosh catering company.

But guests at the swanky party pursued him, and when he sought shelter in a disabled toilet in Star Bingo, they guarded him until the PSNI arrived. Mcdaid, who already had 141 convic- tions, stole catering equipment valued at £1,560 from the function on Monday night just three weeks after being released from prison on licence.

Prosecutor Seamus Quigley told Derry Magistrates Court yesterday: “I am tempted to wonder if this incident might feature in an episode in series three.” Mcdaid, 24, who had been released on licence from prison three weeks earlier, yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing a blue BMW jacket, a Black & Decker toolbox and catering knives.

Mcdaid also headbutted a police officer in the face after his arrest. District Judge Barney Mcelholm said he’s been dealing with Mcdaid since the defendant was a 12-year-old.

He added: “One thing that is quite clear is that when he is out of custody he will re-offend.

“If there was any prospect of turning him around I would consider it but there is nothing in his behaviour to convince me he has arrived at that point.”
