Weir glad to have a Laff again

- BY GARY RALSTON

DAVIE WEIR gave Kyle Lafferty a half-time rocket at Pittodrie a decade ago before laughing it off when they took to the skies hours later for Rangers’

Christmas bash.

And the former Light Blues captain hopes the striker’s season is about to take off ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Cup trip to the north east.

Lafferty ended a fivemonth league goal drought when he completed the 5-0 rout of Hamilton at the weekend.

Weir knows the forward comes alive at the business end of the season after scoring in three successive title-winning games during his first Gers spell.

Weir said: “It was spontaneous. The emotion got involved and I just felt I had to say something. I wasn’t happy and that’s how you dealt with it – in the dressing room. You said what needed to be said then went out and tried to win the game.

“I felt Kyle could have helped us more. When you go up to places like Aberdeen you need everyone working hard and contributing and I didn’t feel he was doing enough.

“It was our Christmas night out so we flew from Aberdeen to Bournemouth and we ended up laughing about it. That’s the way it works, you say your bit and you move on. That’s life.

“Kyle needed his goal on Sunday. With Jermain Defoe coming in and Alfredo doing well, he has fallen down the pecking order.

“He would have been delighted to go back to Rangers on the big stage after doing so well at Hearts and he needs a bit of confidence to get in the team.”
