JORDAN DIVIDES THE BIG HITTERS

-

PROMOTION rivals Queen’s University and Annagh United looked like two teams fighting it out at the top of the table as they went toe-to-toe at The Dub on Saturday. A thoroughly entertaining game seemed destined to finish as a goalless stalemate. But the Annagh weren’t to be denied their win and got it thanks to Jordan Campbell’s tap-in with 10 minutes left to play. Gerard Kerr had earlier been sent off for the visitors who closed the gap on the students to a single point with that result. The game had seen two of the most free-flowing footballing sides in the division get it down and try and play. The match could have gone either way but Annagh took over the ascendancy in the second half with wide men Ben Eagle and Craig Taylor particularly dangerous. But it was a rare foray forward by defender Campbell which forced the only goal of the game. That result opened the door for Tobermore United to go top if they could beat Armagh City – and they did just that. Goals by Winton and Whiteside either side of the interval had the visitors in control with a late Campbell strike offering City a lifeline. Portstewart also continued their climb up the table with a 3-0 win away at Lisburn Distillery. Tommy Elder continued his fine start to life for the Seahawks with two goals while Caolan Gillan added the third. Newington YC had Robbie Mcvarnock and Dan White to thank for their 2-1 win over Sport and Leisure Swifts which leaves the West Belfast men bottom of the heap. The derby between Lurgan Celtic and Dollingstown ended goalless at Knockramer.
