A MAN believed to be an irate Brexit supporter hit Jeremy Corbyn with an egg while he made a visit in his constituency yesterday.

The attacker was holding the egg and smashed it against the Labour leader as he visited a Muslim community centre in Finsbury Park, North London.

Police confirmed that a 41-year-old man was held, and party insiders said Mr Corbyn was not hurt in the incident.

It came as pressure mounted over his divisive second referendum policy. Shadow Chancellor John Mcdonnell said yesterday Labour is likely to whip its MPS to back a second vote, warning that unless they look to the UK’S long-term interests “we’ll never be forgiven”.

He said: “I think on an issue such as this we would see a whip but also you’ve got to respect people’s views and constituency interests as well.”

Backbencher Caroline Flint claims up to 70 Labour MPS could vote against a second referendum. And she warns its policy “bodes ill” for the future of the party, which relies on many Leave-voting seats.

Meanwhile, the Independent Group of MPS wrote to Mr Corbyn to urge him to end ambiguity on the issue. The group asked him to confirm if he would put Labour’s Brexit alternative, if successful, and Remain to a vote.
