I’M STRESSED OVER MUM & DAD ARGUING

-

Dear Coleen

I’m a 15-year-old boy, working towards my GCSES in the summer.

The problem is, my parents are constantly arguing, which I find really stressful. I have an older sister who seems able to ignore them and thinks it’s normal for couples to row, but it really gets to me.

I keep thinking my parents are going to get divorced, as rows flare up over the stupidest things and then they don’t talk to each other for ages.

What should I do? Should I tell them how they’re affecting me and that I’m worried they’ll break-up?

Coleen says

They shouldn’t be arguing in front of you and I can imagine you feel very stressed out and upset by it, especially when you’re already feeling the pressure of exams.

I absolutely think you should tell them how you feel. Choose a time when there’s not an argument going on and explain to either one or both of them that their behaviour is upsetting you and you’re worried they’re going to divorce.

Be as honest as you can.

Your sister is wrong – if a couple are arguing constantly, it means something isn’t working and needs to be addressed. But perhaps her way of dealing with the stress is to tune out from the situation and pretend it’s not happening.

Good luck!
