A Derry good return for the golden Girls

Fans buzzing as Channel 4 smash hit returns

DERRY Girls made a triumphant return to our screens last night as series two kicked off.

Before the Channel 4 show even aired, excitement on social media was hitting fever pitch as fans counted down the minutes until it began.

And the programme – which follows five school friends as they navigate teenage life in the 90s – left fans buzzing again.

The first episode saw the gang embarking on a cross-community weekend discussing the “differences and similarities between Catholics and Protestants”.

But the girls were more concerned with mixing with the Protestant boys, despite Erin’s mum Mary warning them “no funny business” for fear one would come back pregnant.

After sneaking into the boy’s room for a party, things soon turned sour when Jenny brought Sister Michael along to gatecrash.

Luckily Erin was quick to come up with a reason for their presence, they just had a “few questions about the British Empire”.

Sister Michael is still one of the stand-out stars, and a fan favourite with many naming her their “spirit animal”. In her usual manner, when the girls clashed with the Protestant boys and the fellow teacher asked if they should intervene, she responded, “Let’s give it a minute”.

Fans flooded social media with their thoughts on the show – written by Lisa Mcgee – and the only criticism seemed to be the 30-minute episodes were not long enough. Some also lamented over having to wait a week for the next instalment blaming Netflix for spoiling them.

And in keeping with the first season, the nostalgic soundtrack was spot on with Teenage Kicks among the hits featuring.

But while most fans were happy to see the show back, some were not quite so thrilled they could not watch the show live on Channel 4’s website.
