NEWRY BEGIN TO LOOK DONE FOUR

- BY CARL KENNEDY

NEWRY City slipped further into the relegation mire after last night’s thumping defeat to Coleraine made it 14 games without a win in the Premiership.

Dean Shiels, Cormac Burke, Eoin Bradley and James Mclaughlin were all on target for the Bannsiders as the basement strugglers fell to their fifth defeat on the bounce.

Newry, who lost Dale Montgomery to a first-half red card, had levelled at 1-1 through Tiernan Rushe, but it’s now just three points from a possible 42 from those last 14 outings.

Coleraine took the lead on 29 minutes when Shiels (above) reacted quickest to fire home after Bradley’s initial effort was blocked inside the area.

Chris Johns then denied Declan Carville an equaliser before Newry were reduced to 10 men before the break when Montgomery was red carded for a second bookable offence.

City, whose last league win was a 1-0 victory at Coleraine in November, equalised just after the break when Rushe register his first goal of the season. But it was 2-1 to Coleraine on the hour mark when January signing Burke pounced for his first goal for the club after Jamie Glackin’s initial effort was parried by Coleman.

Bradley chipped Coleman for 3-1 in the 77th minute – his fourth goal in four games – before substitute Mclaughlin wrapped things up at the death.

Ards, who lie a point above Newry at the foot of the table, have the chance to extend that gap when they host Warrenpoint Town at the Bangor Fuels Arena.
