BARTON: MAN IS HELD OVER RACIST ASSAULT

Former United star Butt bailed in assault probe

POLICE investigat­ing an alleged assault by football manager Joey Barton have made an arrest.

The suspect, who was not officially named, was held for questionin­g after he went to a police station yesterday.

Fleetwood boss Barton, 36, allegedly clashed with Barnsley’s German chief Daniel Stendel after the two sides met on Saturday. South Yorkshire Police said yesterday: “Officers investigat­ing an incident at Barnsley FC arrested a man on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offence and racially aggravated assault. He remains in police custody.”

Former Manchester City player Barton allegedly confronted Stendel, 45, after his side’s 4-2 defeat at the Oakwell

home on Tuesday. The former midfielder, now head coach at United’s youth academy, was released pending further inquiries. He strongly denied assault allegation­s. Stadium. Barnsley striker Cauley Woodrow tweeted that Barton had “assaulted” his boss.

The FA has launched an investigat­ion and is liaising with the police over the incident.

No one from Fleetwood was available to comment yesterday.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called to reports a woman had been assaulted at a house on Broadway, Hale.

“The woman received a small cut to her hand and does not require hospital treatment. A 44-year-old was arrested and has been bailed. Inquiries are on-going.”

Butt, who has two children with wife of 11 years Shelley, is a co-owner of National League club Salford City, with United legends including David Beckham and Paul Scholes.
