NAHKI WELL ON WAY TO TOP RETURN

- BY RON LEWIS

NAHKI WELLS had to take a substantial pay-cut to drop down a division and rejoin QPR on loan from Burnley for the season.

But after his goals helped take Rangers to their third successive win he believes they can get him back to the Premier League.

Wells (above) scored twice after Ebere Eze had fired in the opener as QPR charged to a 3-0 lead inside 30 minutes, before Luton fought back to give the R’s a nervous second half.

Wells was at QPR on loan last season but said he had no hesitation in returning when the opportunity came up, even though he took a hit financially.

“Sometimes you have to make a sacrifice,” said the Bermuda forward. “And playing, that is the most important thing.

“It is not about being in the Premier League with all the financial benefits from it, ultimately it is about playing your best football week-in, week-out. I’m being given that opportunity and want to repay everyone.

“On the back of what I felt was a mediocre season last year I have a lot to prove. I love it here. I got another chance to come back and I promised the fans they will see the best of me this year.”

It was a shocking error by QPR keeper Joe Lumley which let in Harry Cornick for Luton’s first, and when James Taylor scored after the interval Rangers endured some nervy moments.

Graeme Jones, the Luton manager, was happy to take some positives from the defeat.

He said: “We were three down, got back to 3-2 and took them to the last second. But we can’t be naive and come to Championship clubs and start the way we did.”
