TIME TO DAV ANOTHER GO

- BY STEVEN BEACOM

STEVEN DAVIS will dip into his memory bank to help Rangers negotiate a daunting Europa League group.

The Ibrox midfielder will lean on the experience he gained in getting to the UEFA Cup Final in 2008 during his first spell at the club as the current side tries to plot their way past Feyenoord, Porto and Young Boys.

Davis arrived from Fulham in January 2008 just as Gers were beginning their UEFA Cup run after dropping out of the Champions League.

His debut came in a 0-0 Ibrox draw with Panathinaikos and the Northern Irishman scored a crucial goal at home in the next round against Werder Bremen.

Davis then helped Walter Smith’s men see off Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina only to come up short in the Manchester final against Zenit St Petersburg.

Only the most optimistic Gers fan would back

Steven Gerrard’s side to emulate that success but Davis believes the current crop are ready to make a real go of the tournament having come through four qualifiers.

And he’s desperate to get off to a flier when Feyenoord come calling tomorrow.

Davis said: “I have happy memories from playing in

Europe in my first spell and we have some really good ties coming up in our group.

“It will be a tough group but it’s one I think everyone at the club will look forward to and we will relish the battles ahead.”

Rangers bounced back from their 2-0 loss to bitter rivals Celtic (inset) with a 3-1 victory over Livingston at Ibrox.

Despite the painful blow of Old Firm defeat, Davis insists Gerrard’s players must ensure it was only a setback on the road to success.

The 34-year-old added: “We have a lot of big games coming up. Every week is a big game at Rangers. Everyone knows the pressures of playing for the club but I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.

“Up until the game before the international break the season was going very well. That defeat was a major disappointment. What we have to do is not let it affect us moving forward.

“There is still a long way to go and a lot of things to play for. We have to make sure it was only a setback and kick on.

“In the summer, the manager tried to make the squad as a whole a lot more competitive. With the number of games we’re going to have he needs to have the option to change things around and freshen the team.”
