Republic face shoot out with Denmark after Swiss defeat..

Defeat means it’s a must-win shootout with the Danes next

- FROM PAUL O’HEHIR in Geneva

MICK MCCARTHY insists Ireland are already relishing their ‘cup final’ showdown with old foes Denmark next month.

His men were shot down by top seeds Switzerland last night to spurn one chance of automatic Euro qualification.

But they have one more swing at it at Aviva Stadium on November 18 when only a victory will do.

“We are one game from qualification and I will take that,” said Mccarthy.

And goalkeeper Darren Randolph added: “It’s winner takes all against Denmark and we’re not out of it yet so roll on next month.”

The Danes – who stuffed

Ireland in the World Cup play-off – will need a draw to ensure they progress to the finals.

But skipper Seamus Coleman is suspended for that deciding game after his sending off on a second yellow card last night.

Mccarthy said: “From the very start when the group was picked, for us to finish first or second was always going to be an over achievement but we still have a chance to do it.

“We’re playing Denmark at home and I’d have taken that at the start and I’d take it right now. As I said, we still have a chance to qualify and that’s why I’d take it.

“Denmark beat Switzerland last weekend so they have a bit of momentum but it’s going to be a cup final at the Aviva.”

Mccarthy said he could have no complaints with Coleman’s second yellow card as his hands were raised in conceding the penalty.

“In this day and age it’s a penalty as his hands were in front of his face,” said Mccarthy. “Matt Doherty is in the box seat to play next month but he is a Premier League player so we have no issues there.

“The unlikely thing was we would come here and beat this team but we had to play to our maximum and we didn’t.”
