Kate puts on a plastic crown to comfort brave little cancer girl
AS a royal Kate is used to the finest jewellery – but yesterday she happily put on a plastic tiara to make a young cancer girl’s day.
The Duchess of Cambridge’s toy headpiece matched the one worn by kidney tumour victim Wafia Rehmani, who beamed with delight.
Their meeting in Pakistan’s Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore was emotional too for Kate’s husband William as his mother Princess Diana comforted sick children here in 1996 and in 1997 shortly before her death.
William and Kate, who have three children, listened intently as seven-year-old Wafia told them she wants to be a doctor and showed them her toy medical set.
They also met Muhammad Samir, who suffers from Hodgkin lymphoma and told the Duke he wants to be a soldier.
The hospital and research centre was built by cricketer turned Prime Minister Imran
Khan in a tribute to his mother who died from cancer in 1985. William and
Kate once again followed in the steps of Diana yesterday when they visited the stunning Badshahi Mosque in the city.
Kate wowed in an emerald green headscarf and matching shalwar kameez with a gold trim by Maheen Khan during the fourth day of their tour. The scene drew comparisons to a visit made by Diana in 1991. She wore a green coat dress by Catherine Walker – a designer also worn by Kate.
Locals have delighted in meeting the royals this week who have looked relaxed especially joining a game of cricket – where Wills smashed a young bowler for six.
Kate, too, tried a spot of batting in the cricket-mad country... but with less success.
At the SOS Children’s Village, which provides a home for 150 orphaned children, she spoke of the importance of family, saying: “You have reminded us exactly what family means.”
The royals are due to return home this evening.
