ENGLAND IS OUR TARGETT Villa hero Matt has set sights on teaming up with pal Grealish for the Three Lions
MATT TARGETT believes he brings out the best in Jack Grealish – and says the Aston Villa pair would love to link up for England too.
Targett sunk 10-man Brighton in injury-time with his first Aston Villa goal since an £11.5million summer switch from Southampton.
The left-back has played a key role in Villa’s recent hot form after overcoming injury to make his belated full League debut on September 28.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate was in the stands to see ex-england youth team ace Targett notch from a fine assist by Grealish.
Villa skipper Grealish earlier cancelled out Adam Webster’s opener before Aaron Mooy was sent off for a second booking on him.
Targett explained how he and Grealish have a longstanding rapport which helps them thrive together for club – and potentially country too. “That would be nice,” replied the uncapped defender when asked about also linking up together for the national team.
“I will keep working hard and hopefully I get a call-up. I feel I add something different to the team, especially going forward.
“I put crosses in and when Jack plays on the left wing I think it complements him too. It allows him to drift inside and probably play in his favourite role in the No.10 position.
“I enjoy playing with Jack and let’s hope it continues for the rest of the season.
“We played together at Under-19s, U-20s and then U-21s so I have played with him for quite a bit. He beat two opponents and played a lovely ball through and I was so happy my shot went in.”
Villa drew with 10-man West Ham earlier this term and then threw away the lead at Arsenal to lose after the hosts went a man down.
So Targett’s winner was a huge relief – especially for the man himself after injuring his hamstring in the Carabao Cup at Crewe in August.
Targett said: “It hasn’t been easy since I have come here.
“It was very frustrating, especially when you get injured in a Cup game. It sets you back even more.
“But the last few games I started to get myself in the team and it is a massive reward for all the hard work I have done.”
Victory completed successive wins for Dean Smith’s Villa and made it seven points from three games.
They head to champions Manchester City next Saturday lunchtime before league leaders Liverpool visit with a Carabao Cup tie at home to Wolves in between.
Targett added: “We will go to City and take them on at the weekend – the manager has said that already.”
