Exorcist still leaves horror fans in a spin

THE spinning head scene in The Exorcist has been voted the scariest of all time.

The 1973 horror – starring Linda Blair, 13, as possessed Regan – was such a shock upon its cinema release it faced calls for a ban.

The shower stabbing in 1960 classic Psycho came second in the poll of 2,000, ahead of the chest-bursting scene in 1979’s Alien.

Stephen King adaptation­s took the fourth and fifth, with the hobbling scene in 1990’s Misery followed by the “Here’s Johnny!” scene in 1980’s The Shining.

Galaspins.com, which did the poll, said: “The research suggests Brits are more frightened by classic horror movies as five out of the top 10 films were made in the 1970s or earlier.” copper and tin ores, hardy miners would eventually end up toiling 2,000ft down and up to 1.5miles beneath the sea. so-called submarine mines so that the workers could access the rockface below the sea, which was turned blood red by the mine’s waste products.

Over the years, mine owners ordered tunnels to be driven into seams of minerals further out under the water for profits.

A ‘man engine’ was installed to transport miners further into the murky depths. But, as Fran explains: “More risks were being taken”, and in October 1919 tragedy struck.

A link between the rod and the engine snapped, sending 31 men hurtling down the shaft to their doom. It took a week to reach survivors, tunnelling in from the side.

Today, the tin mine has been restored for visitors. Fran says: “It’s a glorious window into an incredible feat of Victorian engineerin­g.”
