HAIRDRYER TREATMENT

Labour MPS maul Corbyn in showdown

- BY BEN GLAZE Deputy Political Editor, OLIVER MILNE and NICOLA BARTLETT

BORIS Johnson holds his first Cabinet meeting since the election and congratulates his “People’s Government” on a “seismic victory”.

That victory came easy to Nicky Morgan, who was elevated to the Lords so that she can stay as Culture Secretary, despite quitting as an MP.

FURIOUS Labour figures have given Jeremy Corbyn “the hairdryer treatment” over their shock election drubbing.

MPS returning to Westminster after the party’s worst defeat since 1935 rounded on their leader during a brutal showdown.

Mary Creagh, who lost her Wakefield seat to the Tories, confronted Mr Corbyn after clearing her office.

She said: “I told him it was his sole decision to call the election and as a result he has delivered the hardest possible Brexit. I told him to come to Wakefield to apologise for five more years of Tory austerity.

“It was a hairdryer moment. He needs to know what he has done. He needs to own his failure.”

Another MP branded the party “irrelevant” ahead of the meeting.

Leaving the session, MP Rachel Reeves said: “I told him you can say all you want that it was about Brexit, the media, people not voting. The biggest drag was him and his leadership.

“If we want to change the lives of those we came into politics to serve we’ve got to win power and that’s not been possible two times under

The PM told ministers his days in office before the election had been “frenetic”, but added: “You ain’t seen nothing yet.” He vowed to “deliver social justice” across the UK.

Mr Johnson also addressed the Commons for the first time since the election, and boasted: “I would say it is one of the best Parliaments that this country has ever produced.”

He is now set to give out peerages to create the Tory majority in the Lords he needs to “get Brexit done”.

Unlock Democracy director Alex Runswick said: “It’s time to demand more from our democracy.”

Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. We need radical change.”

Earlier, Mr Corbyn addressed the Commons for the first time since the loss last Thursday. After congratulating the PM, he said: “I want to pay tribute to those members from my party who sadly lost their seats.”

One Shadow Cabinet Minister suggested having a “Michael Howardtype figure” for the next few years.

Ex-home Secretary Lord Howard led the Tories 2003 to 2005 – after they axed Iain Duncan Smith and before David Cameron. He helped slash the Labour majority in 2005, paving the way for Mr Cameron to be PM.

But another Labour MP said none of their candidates fit the bill.
