TYSON FURY’S new trainer Sugarhill Steward claims his uncle Manny would be proud the pair have teamed up.

Fury brought in the American to replace Ben Davison for his rematch with Deontay Wilder on February 22. The unbeaten former world heavyweight champ first met Sugarhill when he visited Manny Steward’s legendary Kronk gym in Detroit a decade ago.

Sugarhill, whose real name is Javan Hill, believes his uncle, who died in 2012 having trained a host of world champions including Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko and Fury’s cousin Andy Lee, would have been delighted to see them working together.

“This isn’t a brand new start,” he said. “I’m somebody he’s familiar with. We lived together for one month – me, Tyson and Emanuel.

“We had good and memorable times. Now, the boys are back.

Emanuel would be proud. He probably saw this coming.”

Sugarhill says the brash, largerthan-life Fury made quite an impression on him and his uncle when he pitched up in the States insisting he would be world heavyweight champion one day.

Steward (right, with Lennox Lewis) was so taken he gave Fury a pair of boots, which he wore when he sensationally dethroned his star pupil Klitschko in 2015 to become world heavyweight king.

“I’ll never forget it,” said Sugarhill.

“You don’t forget a person like him. Big, loud, funny and could back it up in the ring.

“His athleticism was crazy and his spirit was beautiful.

He wasn’t arrogant, he was appreciative.

“What did I see in

Tyson? How he thinks, how he treats other people, his character, what kind of person he is. It’s not just about training a fighter’s skills. He has qualities you only see in people every so often.”

Davison was heavily criticised by Fury’s dad John for his lacklustre showing in his last fight against Otto

Wallin in September when he laboured to a points win. Now the

Gypsy King will hook up with Sugarhill (above) to train in Las Vegas for the Wilder rematch, which has been slated for the city’s MGM Grand Garden Arena. “He wanted a trainer who was technical,” said Sugarhill, who also trained world light-heavyweight champ Adonis Stevenson. “He wants to be very technical. We’ll work on his technique. “These are the characteristics he was looking for when he called me, and I fit the description. It all happened so fast. Initially he spoke to me about coming into camp. Then I heard Ben Davison is gone and I’m the head trainer.” Fury dramatically climbed off the canvas to earn a draw with Wilder 12 months ago.
