HALT THIS HANDBALL LAW CHAOS
PREMIER LEAGUE bosses have written to FIFA begging for a change to the VAR handball ruling that is causing chaos. It comes as referees are being told to start using pitchside monitors on red-card decisions this weekend. FIFA lawmakers are being urged to scrap the ruling that dictates any contact between
hand and ball is automatically handball.
The League Managers Association have written to football’s world body listing examples where goals have been reviewed on VAR then disallowed because of non-intentional handball.
They are pushing for changes, citing the frustration of clubs, players and fans over the strict interpretation of any contact with hand or arm.
Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is one of the ruling’s fiercest critics.
His side lost out in midweek when Pedro
Neto’s ‘goal’ at Manchester United was chalked off because the ball hit Raul Jimenez in the build-up.
Nuno said: “The handball rule is going to be reviewed, that’s for sure. Managers, players, fans have all seen it’s not OK. The message is so clear and so loud.”
The call to use the monitor results from the row surrounding Pierreemerick Aubameyang’s dismissal at Crystal Palace for a foul last week.
Referee Paul Tierney initially gave a yellow card, waited on VAR to upgrade it to a red, but did not consult the monitor.
Now the Professional Game Match Officials Limited has told refs to check the screens as it will help decisions be accepted.
