JEEZ LUIZ ...WHAT A GAME

Derby daze leaves Lamps fuming & Arteta jumping for joy

THE away end went absolutely wild after one of the craziest derbies of the season.

Twice, Arsenal’s 10 men came from behind to salvage a remarkable point at Stamford Bridge on a rollercoaster night of drama, pantomime villains and unlikely heroes.

Chelsea will still be wondering how they did not win after David Luiz was sent off after just 26 minutes. Teenager Gabriel Martinelli grabbed a second-half leveller, Cesar Azpilicueta looked to have won it for Chelsea, yet somehow Arsenal snatched a second equaliser through Hector Bellerin.

Gunners fans celebrated, home fans fumed and the two benches could not have been more of a contrast. Frank Lampard was frustrated by more points dropped at home, Mikel Arteta jumping for joy.

Arteta’s team still needs major work, especially in defence, but do at least have heart and courage, while it looks at times like Chelsea are the team who are still learning.

It is always a worry for Arsenal fans when Shkodran Mustafi and Luiz line up together in central defence. And sure enough, they proved an accident waiting to happen.

Chelsea supporters were booing Luiz on his return to Stamford Bridge, while Arsenal’s often feel like doing the same to Mustafi. The pair are a nightmare and one thing is for sure, Arteta will never be able to build a successful team with them at the heart of defence.

Mustafi’s distribution was awful, Luiz’s not much better and it was only a matter of time before they blundered.

Chelsea went close early on, with Antonio Rudiger’s header saved by Bernd Leno and Callum Hudson-odoi’s crossshot hitting the bar.

But having weathered the early storm, Mustafi and Luiz ensured it all went horribly wrong.

Mustafi horribly under-hit a back pass, Leno rushed out of his goal as Luiz desperately raced back in pursuit of Tammy Abraham who was racing through.

Abraham rounded Leno and was about to shoot when Luiz crudely upended him.

Referee Stuart Attwell had no option but to send off Luiz because the double jeopardy rule does not count when it is deemed the defender does not

make a genuine attempt to play the ball. Jorginho stepped up to slot home from the spot.

Arsenal were a goal down, a man down and still had

Mustafi on the pitch.

Yet from there, they began to play better.

Arteta had Rob

Holding stripped and ready to come on but changed his mind as his 10 men made a fight of it.

Hudson-odoi was denied by another smart save from Leno, while Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira scrapped and battled in midfield, and there were flashes of skill from Nicolas Pepe.

Incredibly the Gunners were level on 64 minutes when a clearance by Mustafi, of all people, sent Martinelli scampering through on goal.

The 18-year-old held his nerve to slot past Kepa with what as the visitors’ first shot of the game.

Arsenal were hanging on and, just when it looked like they would survive, Azpilicueta put Chelsea in front again from Hudson-odoi’s 84th-minute cross.

But there was more to come when Bellerin picked up the ball on the edge of the box.

He found space to curl a low shot through a crowd of players and beat Kepa at his far post.
