SHAQ CAN PACK..BUT FOR £25M
LIVERPOOL have slapped a £25million price tag on Xherdan Shaqiri but the Swiss international won’t be allowed to leave until the summer.
Shaqiri has made just two Premier League starts all campaign and that has persuaded both Roma and Sevilla to make a formal approach to take the forward (above) on loan for the rest of the season.
But Kop boss Jurgen Klopp is adamant he cannot afford to lose any players from his squad with Liverpool, still in the FA Cup, pursuing a dream Premier League and Champions League treble.
Liverpool have rejected the loan requests, insisting that the player will leave only on their terms and at a price more than twice what they paid for him when he joined from Stoke in 2018.
Klopp, who has already brought in Takumi Minamino during the transfer window, will look to make further signings in the summer.
German international Kai Havertz and Houssem Aouar of Lyon are on his radar, and he has also been linked with Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
Klopp has floated the idea that clubs may have to accept less money to reduce the crippling workload players face. Speaking about Liverpool’s involvement in the Club World Cup in 2021, he insisted there are simply too many competitions.
“I like the idea (of the Club World Cup) but you just cannot add on another tournament and another and another,” he said. “Where is the year when there is no tournament? It’s just not there for some players. Then you come up with the money. So I say ‘less money for less games.’ FA Cup replays? Have a penalty shoot-out.
“The argument against that is that the smaller teams have a chance to win the game. Then give them the home game in the first place.”
