Did missing Ryan, 39, fake his own death?
Man who left suicide note at Bali cliff was wanted by Oz cops
A BRITISH entrepreneur who vanished in Bali could have faked his own death, police now believe.
And it has emerged that Ryan Roth, 39, was wanted by police in Australia, suspected of being behind a string of frauds dating back to 2008.
Roth’s belongings and a note to his ex-girlfriend were found at a cliff-edge in Pecatu Village in Bali on Monday. His motorbike was nearby.
Shrubs appeared undisturbed at the bottom of the 500ft cliff and no body has been recovered.
South Kuta Police Chief Yusak Agustinus Sooai said: “We haven’t confirmed whether he fell, it was suicide, or he left the location safely.”
Officers said the letter found inside Roth’s bag was addressed to his ex-girlfriend Alice Yu, originally from Hong Kong.
It read: “I’m sorry Alice, I’m the man you fell in love with, but past things I never did made you feel like I was a stranger. I’ll always love you. None of this is your fault.”
But Ms Yu has told police she had not had problems with Roth, from Southampton.
Australian media reported that Roth had been accused of scamming people in several countries and was wanted by New South Wales police.
A police spokeswoman said: “Following a 2008 online fraud report, allegedly involving a man then aged 27, Sydney City Police conducted an investigation. Investigators are yet to formally speak to the man, who left the country.”
A post on a website for scam victims claims that Roth, who allegedly used a pseudonym, had sold a “1970 penny to an elderly woman for some A$8,100 [£4,227], essentially robbing her of her life savings”.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man missing in Bali and are in contact with the Indonesian police.”
Roth, who dropped out of university, describes himself as a “cultural anthropologist” and was CEO of Kabu & Co, a small Singapore-based coffee bean trading exchange.
His website states: “I started or been the head of various companies and industries, including an architecture firm with 400 architects.”
