Corrie Katie: I’ll chase LA dream

- BY NICOLA METHVEN and MARK JEFFERIES

KATIE Mcglynn has set her sights on heading to America to became a global star after leaving the Coronation Street cobbles.

The 26-year-old won the Serial Drama Performance award at the NTAS for her portrayal of Sinead Tinker’s heartbreaking death from cervical cancer.

Asked if she would try her hand in Hollywood for acting jobs, she said: “Yeah, definitely. I’m planning to go to LA at some point. It’s just fitting it in.

“I’ve got some personal projects that I want to do. I’ve had some weird and wonderful meetings for this year.

“But I’m definitely going to go to LA at some point and chase my dream. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen but I need to try.

“It is nerve-racking but it’s exciting. We’re all here on Earth to have an exciting time.

“I’d love to play a sassy or evil role.

Something really different to get my teeth into.”

Katie was one of two big NTA winners for

Corrie on Tuesday night as Peter Ash, who plays Paul Foreman in the soap, picked up the Newcomer award.

Reflecting on her time on the cobbles, Katie said: “I look back on Coronation Street with so many memories. I practically grew up on the show. I love everyone there, they are my family.

“The main thing I will miss is the people. I feel privileged to have been part of the show for seven years.”

And she said she was thrilled at how people had reacted to her tough final storyline. She added: “My main job as an actress was making the performance as real as possible, because I understand real people are going through this right now... so I wanted to make it as real as I could. The fact people voted for the storyline in general and me personally just kinds of seals the deal for me. I’m over the moon. I’m still inundated with messages, it’s still raising awareness. “I just want young women going for their smears. That’s all I’m going to keep saying. I know I’ve left Coronation Street but I’m still going to keep banging on about it because it’s important. “I wanted to raise awareness and I think I’ve done that. Winning this is the cherry on top of the cake.”

Katie also admitted to sleeping with her NTA. On Twitter the day after the awards, she said: “It’s not every morning you wake up next to an

NTA award! So humbled & full of love right now, thank you all so much for voting and to team

Corrie you’ve been the most amazing place to call home for 7 years! I cannot tell you how much this means to me.”

Actors leaving

Coronation Street to go on to have major success include Suranne Jones,

Michelle Keegan and

Sarah Lancashire.

Christopher Quinten, who is best known as Brian Tilsley on Corrie, got a part in

Robocop 2 but failed to get big roles. Eastenders’ Ben Hardy landed a part in X-men: Apocalypse and Hollyoaks’ Ricky Whittle has been a star in big US series American Gods – showing Katie success is possible.
