WOLVES’ DEJA VAR!

History repeats for Nuno’s men as ‘winner’ by Boly is controversially chalked off again

NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO and Wolves were frustrated by Leicester and VAR again, as history repeated itself despite the visitors having Hamza Choudhury sent off.

The two clubs drew 0-0 at the King Power Stadium on the opening weekend when Leander Dendoncker had a goal ruled out by VAR for a handball by Willy Boly in the build up (below).

This time Boly headed in before the break, but Pedro Neto was harshly adjudged to be offside in the build up by the slimmest of margins as VAR denied Wolves again.

Wanderers pressed for a winner when the visitors were reduced to 10 men 14 minutes from time after midfield enforcer Choudhury saw red for a second booking.

Third-place Leicester were looking good for Champions League football next season anyway, but Manchester City’s punishment from

UEFA has probably sealed it.

Wolves will know they have a good chance of finishing in fifth which could get them into the competition too now.

City’s two-year ban from Europe, subject to appeal, was the talking point at Molineux before the game.

This point lifted Wolves to seventh – three points behind Sheffield United in fifth.

But the hosts threw on flying winger Adama Traore in a bid to secure the victory only for Leicester to hold firm.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers gave his squad last week off to relax while Wolves went to Spain for a training camp.

But it was the Foxes who came out of the blocks fastest as Youri Tielemans brought a good save out of Rui Patricio.

Yet Wolves almost took the lead in the 11th minute only for keeper Kasper Schmeichel to make a fine low stop with his outstretched left leg from Diogo Jota after good work by Neto. Both sides looked dangerous at set-pieces as Boly tested Schmeichel at one end before Caglar Soyuncu headed James Maddison’s free-kick at Patricio at the other end.

But Wolves soon began to take control of the first half as Jonny headed Matt Doherty’s cross wide in the 29th minute. Spanish wing-back Jonny then teed up top-scorer Raul Jimenez before the break with an excellent cross from the left.

But the Mexican, who has 20 goals this term, planted his header wide as he surprisingly failed to hit the target. Wanderers did have the ball in the back of the net in the 43rd minute when Doherty headed Neto’s cross back across goal for Boly to head in. But VAR ruled Neto was fractionally offside in the build up to the fury of Wolves fans who have now seen four goals chalked off under the new rules.

It was the latest harsh decision to affect the Midlands club, who had efforts controversially ruled out at league leaders Liverpool and Leicester on the opening day.

Even Wanderers’ usually mild-mannered skipper Conor Coady went off remonstrating with referee Mike Dean at the break.

The unimpressed home fans vented their fury as they chanted: “It’s not football any more”.

Leicester improved after the break and appealed for a penalty when Maddison could find no way past the determined Romain Saiss.

But City’s hopes were hit in the 76th minute when Choudhury received a second caution for bringing down Dendoncker.

The hosts poured on the pressure against 10 men but Leicester hung on for a point.
