Deeney: I’m liked by Arsenal fans for ending Kop unbeaten run.. that’s a first

- BY MIKE WALTERS

DEENEY enjoyed a new phenomenon, popularity among Arsenal fans, and admitted: “It’s a good day to be alive.”

Watford’s trashing of Liverpool’s unbeaten run preserved the Gunners’ record as the Premier League’s only Invincibles of the 21st century.

And the Hornets talisman, who upset north London snowflakes with his infamous ‘cojones’ barb in 2017, chortled after his sixth goal of the season: “Popular with Arsenal fans? That’s a first!” Deeney (left) went on: “I suppose it’s significant for

people who care about things like that. Arsenal fans like me now? Oh, well - I’m going to go home and the kids are going to take over... that’s how much Arsenal fans bother me.”

Deeney (right) refused to rub Liverpool’s noses in the aftershock of a stunning defeat, adding: “They are still an unbelievable side - world club champions, European champions, soonto-be Premier

League champions. Invincibles or not, it doesn’t mean that they’re not an unbelievable side.

“It was our day today and Arsenal fans like me. It’s a good day to be alive.”

TV comic and Arsenal fan Jack Whitehall even tweeted that he’d always like the Watford striker.

Deeney revealed that Watford had tuned up for climbing out of the bottom three with a more relaxed training regime – featuring yoga and aquatherapy. He said: “This week was the least we’ve done. We had a yoga day on Thursday. We came away from the training ground and went for a yoga and swimming day because the gaffer wanted to clear our minds.”

The only sour note for Watford was winger Gerard Deulofeu’s seasonending knee injury. Deeney said: “I said to him at half-time ‘We’re going to win this for you’ – and I’m a man of my word today.”
