THE NEW RONNIE

Bruno sets himself daunting target of topping Cristiano

BRUNO FERNANDES has revealed his ambition to match compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo’s trophy haul at Manchester United.

Fernandes has made an impressive start to his United career, with three goals and four assists in nine games since his £46.6million move from Sporting Lisbon.

But he has a way to go to equal Portugal team-mate Ronaldo’s 118 goals, three Premier League titles, one Champions League, two League Cups and one FA Cup during his Old Trafford spell.

Although already a cult hero with United fans following his explosive start, Fernandes said he will be happy only when he has matched

Ronaldo and Nani, another fellow Portuguese and former Red.

“Cristiano and Nani won big trophies here and that makes me want to achieve the same,” said Fernandes. “Nani has always spoken well to me about United.

“And the fact that Cristiano gave a lot of good references to whoever spoke to him during my transfer makes me proud. Now I want to leave a mark here.

“The intensity of the game is very high. I was thinking fast in Portugal but here I have to think twice as fast.”

Fernandes said he struggled to believe how much United paid for him, with the potential outlay totalling £67.7m if all add-ons are achieved.

“Never were the values so high as now,” said Fernandes. “Players who were bought at that value some time ago were Golden Ball winners.” The 25-yearold revealed he regrets goading Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

The United playmaker gestured to Guardiola to ‘shush’ (above) in City’s 2-0 derby defeat at Old Trafford earlier this month.

“As everything in life, nothing is defined by what a person has won,” said Fernandes. “I condemn myself because the best response would have been to remain silent and he would have been left to speak alone.”
