LIAM’S KEY WELLBEING

Rio shows midfielder is vital Fir team’s health

FORMER Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has unearthed a stunning statistic to highlight Northern Ireland midfielder Liam Donnelly’s value to Motherwell.

Donnelly had scored an impressive 11 goals in 29 games for

Stephen over long distance is just ridiculous.”

Donnelly began his career as a defender but has starred in a midfield role this season after being moved there by Motherwell boss Robinson.

“Before this season I hadn’t had a proper run in a single position,” he said. “I was always being moved about – right back, centre back and centre midfield.

“It can be frustrating, but I’ve enjoyed this season because I’ve slotted more into the defensive midfield role and it’s nice to get a run of games.

“I’m obviously still learning about the position, but I’m really enjoying it and I hopefully see myself staying in there.”

Donnelly, represented by Belfastbased agent Lee Mudd, was chatting to Ferdinand due to the former Old

Trafford star’s role as a mentor for the

New Era Global

Sports agency.

And the former

Dungannon Swifts,

Fulham and Hartlepool player was asked to outline his future aims, both at club and international level.

Donnelly returned to the Northern Ireland squad in

September and won his second cap in a recent 1-0 friendly win over Luxembourg.

“I’ve performed well enough to get back into the international set-up so as long as I keep performing, I’m happy,” he said.

“There are some big names and great players in the (Northern Ireland) squad and it’s good to test yourself in training and learn off top players every day.

“It’s been good for me to train with Steve Davis who is a very intelligent player and very good on the ball. You’ve also got Jonny Evans.”

“Underrated player,” said Ferdinand. “Yeah, unbelievable,” said Donnelly. “Could easily play for any team in the Premier League.”

As for the immediate future, Donnelly accepts there is growing uncertainty over when or if the Scottish season will be concluded due to the coronavirus crisis.

“The situation we’re in at the moment, I don’t know whether we’ll finish the season, but that’s not in our hands,” he said. “The club has sent us fitness and gym programmes.

“I’ve got a treadmill in the house, going out for runs and doing what I can to stay in top condition. If the season does start again, you have to be ready.”
