Library readers reaching for a Reacher

A PENSIONER has been taken to hospital after he was assaulted when he confronted two intruders.

The PSNI said that shortly after 3am yesterday the resident, in his 70s, was awoken by a noise and found the men outside his property in Co Tyrone.

He confronted them, was assaulted and had his phone stolen.

Inspt Gavin Sterling said: “The victim sustained some injuries, however, none of his injuries are believed to be serious.”

JACK Reacher again stars in the nation’s favourite library book – as author Lee Child tops the mostloaned list with The Midnight Line.

Child, whose investigator was played by Tom Cruise in the Jack Reacher film series, had three books in the top 10 – Past Tense in fifth place and last year’s favourite Night School at number seven.

But James Patterson was the most-borrowed author for the 13th year running, ahead of Child at number four.

The list was dominated by crime and thrillers, with Dead if You Don’t by Peter James, Wild Fire by Ann Cleeves, Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly and Dan Brown’s Origin all in the top 10.

But David Walliams’ The World’s Worst Children was in second place and Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine was fourth in the list revealed by The Bookseller trade magazine.

It also revealed Honeyman’s book was the top choice in London,

Walliams’ in the

East of England and Northern Ireland, while The Midnight

Line led in the rest of the country. The mostborrowed e-book was also revealed for the first time, which was Eleanor Oliphant. Libraries Connected last month estimated a 358% rise in people borrowing e-books during the first three weeks of lockdown.
