Bacon butty grabs the top spot as nation’s fave
BACON has sizzled into the top spot as our favourite sandwich filling.
That’s hard cheddar on cheese, which has been ousted as the nation’s go-to.
The survey by Warburtons did not solve the tomato sauce/brown sauce argument for the great bacon buttie.
But it found mayonnaise was the top sandwich condiment overall, followed by pickle, ketchup and English mustard.
Medium-sliced white bread was the most popular sandwich loaf, and the rule most people follow is: crusts on and cut into squares, not triangles.
Fish fingers were in the top 20 while crisps were just outside at 21.
But outside the mainstream, some fans are branching out with more unusual – and some downright odd – fillings. They include chocolate spread and salami, corned beef and peanut butter – and even chocolate biscuits between two slices of buttered bread
The average household gets through two loaves a week, with sandwiches accounting for more than half of lunchtime meals. On average we tuck into four sandwiches and two toasties a week – but a fifth are eating more than one sandwich a day.
Lunch remains the most popular time to enjoy a sarnie for eight in 10 people, but a quarter said they would gladly eat one at any time of day.
Warburtons, which polled 2,000, said: “However you prepare it, or whatever you fill it with, there’s something that can’t be beaten about a good old sandwich.
“It’s also great to see Brits get more creative in the kitchen.
“The combinations are endless so it comes as no surprise that bread is still one of the nation’s favourite go-tos.”
