Skewer found in dog’s tum.. after 2 years

- BY MARTIN FRICKER

A PET dog which survived with a barbecue skewer in its stomach for two years has finally had it removed.

Owner Karen Ferguson, 38, spent £3,000 on vets’ bills trying to discover why cocker spaniel Gilly was in constant discomfort.

The mystery was solved when her husband spotted the wooden skewer poking out of the dog’s tummy.

Karen thinks Gilly swallowed the item at a family barbecue in August 2017.

She said: “My husband Richard walked past him and questioned, ‘what’s that sticking out of him?’

“My son held Gilly and we started to pull what looked like a bit of wood.

Vets removed the object and Gilly has now recovered at home in Somerset.

She was ready to show off the results in her sparkly dress for a Strictly Come Dancing-style contest in South Wales – before Covid-19 scuppered her plans.

“It’s unfortunately been postponed,” says the campaigning Swansea East MP. “That gives us longer to practise American Smooth to Michael Buble. And we had flags with us in our dancing gear, we don’t want them to go to waste.”

Physical tiredness in April last year triggered a change in her lifestyle, unleashing a commitment as formidable as her fight for working people.

Taking a pause from organising meals for 400 hard-up people and 100 staff in Swansea’s Morriston Hospital, she
