THE ROAD TO REOPEN NIGHTLIFE
A PLAN has been put forward to allow some restaurants and cafes in South Belfast to re-open.
It would potentially see closing weekend traffic on parts of the Ormeau Road to non-residents, meaning hospitality could trade while maintaining social distancing. Fewer cars would allow businesses to use the extra space to have service outside.
The idea was suggested by Ciaran Fox, director at the Royal Society of Architects, who first pitched it on social media.
He said: “We have to ask how we allow things to resume in a safe way and try and address those issues first.
“These are all things that can be worked out along the way. It’s important we’re in constant communication with residents and businesses on the issue.
“The road will allow for people who need to use their car because of mobility issues.”
Some restaurants in the area welcomed Mr Fox’s proposal.
Doro Fassauge, manager at the restaurant L’etoile, said: “In general, I think it’s a really great idea.
“It would be a great way to revitalise the area and it could have a really great impact on the road.
Christine Naylor, manager at Soul Food, added: “I am all for anything that can get things going again. Trying to get that level of trade up again is going to be difficult and it would be wonderful to try it out.”
A spokesman for Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: “The Department would be pleased to work with Belfast City Council and other stakeholders to explore what we can achieve together to enhance and protect communities across the North.”
