O’connor was expelled from school and left education without any formal qualifications. He has not worked since the age of 19. He was convicted in 2017 for offences arising from domestic abuse of a previous partner.
The LCJ’S statement added: “He has a history of drug and alcohol abuse, aggressive behaviours and incidents of self-harm including several attempts at suicide.
“Between 2004 and 2010 the defendant was persistently before the courts and had 86 convictions.”
Judge Millar described O’connor’s version of events that night as “replete with unsupported assertion, contradictions and blatant and cruel lies.”
The judge said O’connor’s only thoughts following the attack were of himself and how he would avoid the consequences of his actions.
It was also noted that O’connor denied any knowledge of how Joleen was hurt in five hours of police interviews, only submitting a statement almost 10 months on. Assistant
Director of the Public Prosecution Service Lynne Carlin said: “This is the first case in which a murder conviction has followed the withdrawal of artificial hydration and nutrition from a victim of a violent crime.
“Together with police we built the strongest possible case against O’connor, which resulted in him pleading guilty to murder.”
