SWANN: HAVE FUN & USE COMMON SENSE

- BY SHAUNA CORR

AS pubs, cafes and restaurants get ready to reopen, the Health Minister issued a warning to revellers.

Robin Swann urged those socialising over the weekend not to lose their commone sense.

He said: “We are all familiar with the phrase, ‘When the drink’s in, the wit’s out’.

“I hope and trust this will not be the case in Northern Ireland. Please drink and act responsibly and be sensible at all times.

“This is an important date for many local businesses and I am sure many people are looking forward to socialising with friends.

“I am not out to spoil anyone’s enjoyment. However, I have to remind everyone once again that the threat from Covid-19 is still very much with us.

“Keep sticking to the basics – keep your distance from each other and keep washing your hands.

“Be aware that alcohol can affect your judgment and alter your behaviour. Also, when we meet up with friends, a handshake or a hug is a very natural instinct. We have to fight that instinct for the sake of ourselves and others.

“By all means enjoy yourselves but don’t pour your common sense down the drain.”

Pubs, restaurants and bars have been issued with advice ahead of reopening.

Revellers can expect less people indoors and in beer gardens, with social distancing in place.

Those enjoying meals or drinks will have to be seated at tables where they will be served, while no one will be allowed to stand at bars.

It has also been advised that venues put a booking system in place to prevent queues outside.

Regular cleaning is advised while bands and live sports go against Government advice. The current Covid-19 reproduction number is now estimated to be at 0.3 to 0.8 in Northern Ireland.

One more death was reported by the Department of Health while seven people have tested positive.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael Mcbride said: “Restrictions have been eased on a number of fronts as a result of the progress we have made in the battle against Covid-19. “Responsible socialising means remaining vigilant about the virus and continuing to follow the public health advice.”

Economy Minister Diane Dodds hailed the reopening of the hospitality sector as a hugely positive step.

She said: “It remains vital that everyone – business owners, staff and customers – takes the appropriate precautions.”
